My boyfriend has been craving Velveeta Shells & Cheese and since money is especially tight around the 1st and 15th of the month I didn’t argue. I did want to make this budget friendly meal a little fancier though. I decided to toss in some turkey bacon and green onion. For the topping I decided to toast some bread crumbs with olive oil on medium heat until they were golden. My boyfriend went wild and even though it was $1.98 for the shells and cheese it tasted like a million bucks just by adding a few simple ingredients into the mix.
- 1 pkg. Kraft Velveeta Shells and Cheese, prepared
- 8 slices of bacon, cooked and chopped
- 1 green onion, sliced (only the green parts)
- 1/4 cup bread crumbs
- 1 tbs. olive oil
- In the sauce pot you prepared the shells and cheese in, stir in chopped bacon and green onion.
- In a small frying pan combine bread crumbs and oil on low heat until toasted.
- Serve shells and cheese in individual containers and top with toasted bread crumbs.
I headed to Walmart to get the Velveeta Shells and cheese. While I was there I thought I would #rollintosavings with all of Walmart’s Rollbacks on Kraft items. I picked up the shells along with shredded cheese, bbq sauce, and Italian dressing (not pictured). I thought about what might pair nicely with the shells and cheese and came up with a BBQ chicken salad with bacon and cheese.
For the salad I used cucumber, carrot, romaine, green onion, turkey bacon, Italian dressing, mozzarella cheese, and grilled BBQ chicken. I’m not a big cheese person so feel free to use any kind of cheese you like. I just grilled the chicken on my grill pan and coated it in the Kraft BBQ sauce.
With all of my savings my grocery bill came to around $14.65 so I knew I had some left to make something amazing. I decided to whip up my double chocolate brownies. Since we were already going decadent with the shells and cheese, I thought why not.
Everything paired well together and I’m super happy with all the money we saved. What are some of your favorite budget friendly meals? I would love to try some out 🙂
