Skinny Sweet Tea

Last summer we drove down to Kip’s cousins house in Virginia. While we were there we stopped for some steaks at Texas Roadhouse. Every time we go out to eat I always order a tea. When I went to take a sip of this baby… boy was it sweet! Unlike my boyfriend, I don’t drink sweet tea. When I first tasted the tea I made the ugliest face and everyone laughed at me. I didn’t realize going from Pennsylvania to Virginia the tea would turn to 100% sugar.

My boyfriend says this tea tastes just as good as the real southern sweet tea. He loves that it has 75% less calories (so he can drink the whole batch without feeling guilty). Since we have changed our lifestyle we have felt so much better. We have more energy during the day and we’re both feeling healthier. I know by looking at most of the recipes on my blog you probably wouldn’t think I eat healthy, but I cook healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. 🙂

Ingredients
  1. 5 Lipton tea bags
  2. 6 cups water
  3. 1/4 cup plus 1 tbs. Truvia Baking Blend
  4. 1/8 tsp. baking soda
  5. 2 cups ice
Instructions
  1. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling remove from heat and add tea bags to the boiling hot water. Let the tea bags sit in the water for 10 minutes. Remove tea bags one by one and carefully squeeze out the tea by pressing each tea bag between two spoons. Stir in Truvia and baking soda until completely dissolved. Add remaining water and ice to the tea and stir. Enjoy!
Notes
  1. If you're not interested in making this skinny, use 3/4 cup of regular sugar instead of Truvia.
  2. I used Truvia Baking Blend because it has real sugar mixed in. If you've ever used Stevia before you will know that it sometimes gives things a bitter taste.

I remember the same experience when I was in Mississippi as a child. Growing up in California, we didn’t drink sweet tea. LOL … Now, every once in a while I will have some sweet tea, so this will be a great less-guilt option. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I don’t understand adding the baking soda. Is it because of the stevia?

The baking soda actually takes away the bitterness from the tea. If you’re really curious make it without it and taste it. Then add it in. It makes a world of a difference. When you add it, it makes the tea “smooth”.
